ɫƵ rings in 60th anniversary

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, President of ɫƵ, addresses the room at a ɫƵ alumni event at London's Oxford and Cambridge Club

Last night’s alumni event at the Oxford and Cambridge Club marked the official start of a milestone year, as we celebrate six decades of ɫƵ.

Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, President of ɫƵ, addresses the room at a ɫƵ alumni event at London's Oxford and Cambridge Club

Founded as University College in 1965, ɫƵ has undergone a period of tremendous change – from a postgraduate college located in a single house, to the academic and physical home of more than 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students from around the world, with a thriving international community of Fellows, staff, alumni, and members.

From the construction of the Club Room in 1970 and the launch of the ɫƵ Press Fellowship in 1982, to the opening of the Chancellor’s Centre in 2004 and the renovation of the Porters’ Lodge in 2020, ɫƵ continues to grow and evolve to meet the needs of the changing fabric of our community.

Our sixtieth year will also see the completion of the multi-million pound kitchen refurbishment project, with sustainability at the forefront of our future.

But through sixty years of change and progress, ɫƵ has also retained what makes us unique among collegiate Cambridge, and this year we plan to celebrate all that ɫƵ has continued to strive for since 1965: to be a place of lifelong learning, nurturing the non-traditional routes to education that many mature learners take; to welcome debate and diversity; and to continue to foster the egalitarian, open spirit that defines the College.

The events planned for this anniversary year are all about celebrating everyone at ɫƵ – the community that is and has always been at the heart of what makes our College so special. These include a special 60th anniversary exhibition put together by the Library and Archives team, which will showcase a range of archival material illustrating ɫƵ’s history from past to present.

In April, the College will also host a celebratory gala dinner open to all at London’s Mansion House, courtesy of the Lord Mayor of London – Alastair King, son of the late Jack King, ɫƵ’s former Bursar.

There will also be concerts, lectures, and special Foundation Day events, as well as all the other events that keep ɫƵ busy. Keep an eye on our website and What’s On for more information about all the exciting things to come in this celebratory year!

ɫƵ turns 60 this year, and I’m really looking forward to the events that we have planned. We certainly have much to celebrate at ɫƵ: we are unique, much loved, and located on a beautiful site that continues to grow. How lucky I am to have become President of ɫƵ when the College was just about to have a big party!” - Professor Dame Ijeoma Uchegbu, President of ɫƵ
